Doctors Career

Do You Want To Be A Doctor?

If you are planning to take a degree in medicine you can rest assured that you will find your own little niche in the vast healthcare market. The healthcare industry offers a plethora of openings in a number of highly specialized, and even certain general categories. So you can choose to be a consultant doctor, a therapist, a GP, an immunologist, a gynecologist, a physiotherapist….and the list goes on. And that’s not the only list you will have to choose from! If you are keen on a career in medicine at some point of time or the other you will also have to decide exactly where you want to work. You can choose to work in a government hospital or a private hospital or at a clinic or even at a G.P surgical clinic. If you have the right kind of qualification you can also hope to find employment at day care centers, residential homes or pharmacies and laboratories. Specialized qualification will also land you jobs with dentists, opticians and physiotherapists.

At hospitals you will be expected to work in shifts. Most shifts are between 8-10 hours long. However working hours are flexible and you can choose the specific period of the day that you’d be most comfortable working. Also, you can work either as a part-timer or a full-timer at hospitals.

In a doctor’s career, no matter what their specific specialization, need to inculcate certain behavioral traits in order to prove successful in the healthcare industry. The first of these is the capacity to communicate successfully. To ensure good progress in your patients you will need to communicate with them at all points. And not just them you will also have to constantly communicate with your co-workers thus improving your communication skills will prove beneficial for you. A certain level of imagination and inventiveness is also important for doctors. Remember, despite having passed med school you will not always know the answers to all your patients problems, under such circumstances you will have to quickly come up with possible ways to cure them. If you aren’t very inventive you aren’t likely to get very far in this business. Thirdly, be concerned. Remind yourself why you chose the medical profession. Remind yourself of the genuine wish to heal people that got you through those devastatingly tough tests at med school. Medicine is a hard profession, but you need to practice it without getting hardened yourself. Make sure you are patient with your patients. And don’t forget to flash them a smile from time to time.

A doctor can never be wrong because their errors can cost people their lives. As a result a risk (even if it’s a smart one) is a complete no-no in this field. The rigorous training that you have undergone in order to become a doctor ought to have taught you the difference between treating people and playing poker!

As a doctor you will have to remain focused on a patient’s specific problem. So if your patient is getting his hot gall bladder removed don’t suddenly start examining his pancreas! Even if he does have a little something wrong with his pancreas that can wait until after you have gotten through with the surgery and ensured his well-being. Often surgeons get confused about what they should really concentrate on and end up complicating what would have otherwise been a fairly simple problem. A good doctor is thus someone who will be able to prioritize one problem over the other and provide immediate help to the area with the graver problem.

Despite all the caution however doctors do make mistakes sometimes. Often this is because some doctors do not have the kind of expertise they are supposed to in spite of having passed med school. But often this is because they are humans. Of course all doctors need to be perfect, however complete perfection is beyond human capacities. It is therefore important to keep this in mind when dealing with doctors. Similarly, doctors too should remember this vital fact and not get overtly depressed if something does go wrong.
