Advances in technology have resulted in people living way longer than they did in the past. With a population growing in this fashion, the healthcare sector is booming so much so that it is one of the most lucrative industries for a successful career in the United States. Such a boom has lead to the expansion of the healthcare functions and network. Professionals are in demand not only as far as providing medical advice is concerned, but also a team of other professionals who help run a medical organization. It would be important to have a look at the various categories that the work in the healthcare industry has been divided into and the specific functions that each of them involve. Patient Care Such a kind of category requires establishing a direct contact with the patients and assists in solving their problems or provide cure for their ailments. This category in turn may be sub divided into three broad segments as follows: •Nursing – this section of the industry is growing with the demand for qualified nurses increasing around the world. Apart from serving at hospitals, nursing homes and clinics, this profession presents opportunity to engage also in unconventional nursing duties, like traveling nursing, or on a cruise, or in legal firms or insurance companies. •Medical Assistants – though they are qualified enough to perform functions of a doctor, what medical assistants are primarily meant to do is assist in tests, diagnosis and follow up treatment. •Dental Hygienists – medical assistants in a dental clinic are called dental hygienists. They help in cleaning the teeth, running primary tests, and performing the functions that would assist the dentist to conduct his operation smoothly. Non Patient Care This, as the name suggests, does not involve any direct engagement with the patients. The functions these professionals perform are only a little different from those of the professionals already mentioned. And in most cases it has been seen that such professionals take up jobs in this category to save enough money to further their education. These professionals may be: •Medical Coders – a complete knowledge of various medical terminologies is an imperative for such professionals. What they are required to do is primarily to read the progress charts of patients and interpret them and follow course of action accordingly, and then make medical records containing the entire case history. •Medical Office Administrators – their job is to coordinate with office staff and monitor the movement of patients, that is, their check in or check out time, etc. Operational Functions These functions assist in effective running of the medical organization. They may be: •Information technology Professionals – they look into the technological functions essential for smooth treatment and communication. •Medical Billing Professionals – they look after the billing of the patients and related activities. Home Healthcare This is considered to be a growing industry with more and more people being able to afford such services from the comfort of their homes. |
