Requirements For Nurses' Jobs In The UK

In the UK, those who want to be a nurse, have to pass certain examinations before they can practice and work without supervision. A new system of registration for nurses has been introduced in the UK in September 2005 for those trained outside the EEA. UK nurse jobs are quite difficult to land but are quite lucrative.

1. NMC information pack

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) regulates midwifery, health visiting and nursing in the UK. One can contact the NMC and get hold of information packs and application forms for UK nurse jobs. One needs some documents from the nursing regulator in one’s own country which one needs to attach with the form.

2. English language exam

For most jobs in the UK, one needs to be able to speak in English and most employers test whether a candidate can speak English or not before hiring the person. For UK nurse jobs, one needs to sit for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and gain an overall score, that is, the average of the scores in the speaking, listening, reading and writing sections, of at least 6.5. It is also necessary to get at least 5.5 in the reading and listening sections and at least 6 in the speaking and writing sections.

One can find out more about UK nurse jobs and the IELTS from the local British Council and even from the website of the British Council in one’s country. From September 2005, it has been made mandatory for even those whose first language is English if they are from South Africa, New Zealand, Canada, Australia and other Commonwealth countries.

3. NMC decision letter

The NMC decides by looking at previous experience, ability and skills and the ability to speak in English. Then they issue a decision letter. The decision making process takes about two weeks but may be longer. If one satisfies the NMC's requirements, nurses are asked to complete the Overseas Nurses Programme (which also includes a period of supervised practice) before they are registered. The decision letter is valid only for a limited time and one needs to complete the registration procedure within that time or else the offer is withdrawn.

4. Overseas Nurses Programme

The Overseas Nurses Programme (ONP) has been introduced since 1st September 2005. One needs to complete a twenty day supervised learning course at an approved higher educational institution (HEI) for UK nurse jobs. One needs to obtain a visa for coming to the UK on one’s own accord. The higher educational institution assesses your performance during the supervised practice and submits the report to the NMC. If one fails in this supervised practice period, one is allowed another attempt. However, if one passes one can register for UK nurse jobs.
