According to a survey conducted in 2003, of all the registered medical practitioners or doctors in New Zealand, about one percent had obtained their degrees from outside the country, that is, they were foreign doctors practicing and working in New Zealand. This percentage has dramatically increased in the subsequent years with the percentage of foreign doctors shooting up to about a thirty four per cent in the next year that is 2004. If we include the doctors who are temporary registrants, then this figure, it is estimated, will go up to about forty percent, or even a little more. A temporary resident doctor is a medical graduate from overseas who is temporarily working in the country without any plans of settling down. A temporary registration is most cases, lasts for two years. During their stay, such doctors are also supervised.

The biggest medical organization in New Zealand is the New Zealand Medical Association. The members of this organization can be specialists, doctors, as well as medical students. The organization functions to unite all medical professionals thereby promoting better health care and unity among the medical practitioners. The NZMA has many functions from extending support to all member doctors and advocating on behalf of doctors and patients to circulating an ethical code to be abided by all professionals. However, one of the most important tasks is publishing the New Zealand Medical Journal.

NZMA is also involved in political issues relating to the medical profession. It often acts as a larger platform under which other related smaller organizations can conduct their business. There are many seminars organized by the NZMA where various discussions spanning various aspects of the medical profession are discussed. NZMA participates in the CP CME conference held every year. NZMA supports the medical students’ organization NZMSA, for instance. It also has close ties with organizations like the respected Medical Assurance Society as well as service providers like the Medical Benevolent Society and the Doctors Health Advisory Service. Apart from this, the organization also performs various important functions like administrative work, advocacy, communicating services, etc for the section of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, better known by its acronym—RANZCO, established in New Zealand.

The medical vacancies in New Zealand are published in NZMJ or the New Zealand Medical Journal which is published every two weeks as well as other foreign medical journals such as the British Medical Journal and the Southern Doctor. Before practicing in the country, a registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand is mandatory. While medical graduates from New Zealand and Australia can be registered without any hassles, foreign doctors might have to wait for some time.
