The modern economy is witnessing a strain of unemployment because many professions are now demanding degrees. People without degrees also suffer from lower wages as compared to graduates. However, nurses' salaries have not been affected by these developments. In fact, even people who have degrees are beginning to switch over to this profession because of the higher nurses' salaries and the steady demand for these professionals. There is no fixed rate or bars for nurses' salaries. Unlike other professions where there is a clear demarcation of what sort of pay you may expect there is quite a bit of fluctuation in this field.

The base pay for a nurse is calculated using many factors. The first of these is the number of years in experience the nurse has. A Graduate Degree Nurse (GN) will receive the lowest layer of the pay scale. This remains for all nurses till they pass the NCLEX or the board exam. Once they clear this exam their salary will be increased anywhere from $2 to $5 per hour. A point to be noted here is that in case a nurse fails in this exam then the hospital or employer may choose to terminate the employment or offer a grace period. This depends entirely on their policy and discretion. Until recently it was quite common for a nurse to continue working at the hospital for years before they passed their board exams.

Fresh graduates nurses are nearly always offered jobs even before they graduate. The job posts they are offered are typically those offered to a GN or graduate nurse. At this point most student nurses will be seeking positions close to their home because most such students are already in their early-mid thirties and are no longer able to move around easily with their family. While it is true that there are ample jobs for nurses available all over the country it is always better to check how many of these jobs are offered to fresh graduates. The best about being a nurse is that you can work anywhere you want.

Different nursing fields have different nurses' salaries. Recruiters will be quick to point out that nurses with a bachelor's degree are favored above others. Hospitals have a long tradition of offering reimbursement of tuition fees to nurses that are pursuing BSN degrees. In fact, this reimbursement can be as much as 100% of the entire tuition fee. Working in a hospital means that there will be many opportunities for specialization in the various fields of the nursing profession. Nurses' salaries keep increasing with their experience. It is important to remember that every hospital of organization that employs nurses will be unique and hence the salaries too will be unique to that nursing segment.
